Charters Towers grew to be a prosperous town of 20,000 people during a gold rush in the late 1800s. At its peak you could buy anything in Charters Towers. Today the town is a ghost of its former self where the last furniture shop closed a couple of years ago.
We toured the ambulance station (which was also a first aid station) that started life with a horse drawn stretcher wagon.
